Night School Transformation Program (NSTP)

Masoom is a not for profit organization that works with the night school students to work on academics and provide better career opportunities to them. Masoom began with informal research on the educational problem of night schools culminating in an action program in 2008. Masoom is the first organization in Maharashtra to run a comprehensive “Night School Transformation Program” for night school education. Masoom started with 2 night schools in the first year and has gradually increased its reach to 100 schools and 8000+ students in the year 2021-22.

Masoom plans to reach out to 170 night schools by 2025 impacting 25,000 night school students in Maharashtra.

Masoom plans to reach out to 170 night schools by 2025 impacting 25,000 night school students in Maharashtra.

The ‘Night School Transformation Program’ is specifically tailored to meet the needs of the night school and the individual students who are mainly out of school from poor socio-economic backgrounds, most of them working during the day and supporting their families. As a result of the MOU signed with the state government of Maharashtra, Masoom has a mandate to implement the Shaala Siddhi tool in all schools in Maharashtra. This tool is implemented as part of the NSTP program. The project follows a Three-pronged Model to achieve its aim:

Three Pronged Model

Education Infrastructure and Inputs

Notebooks, Textbooks, Mobile Science Labs, Libraries, Nutrition

Capacity Building (For All Stakeholders)

Trustees, Headmasters, Teachers, Students, Parents, Alumni, SMDC, Non-Teaching Staff

Advocacy

Policy, Partnership With the Education Department

IMPROVED SCHOOL INFRASTRUCTURE, INCREASED ATTENDANCE AND ENROLMENT, BETTER ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE, IMPROVED STANDARD OF LIVING.

Masoom provides critical educational infrastructure and resources. This includes basic amenities such as nutrition (evening meals), notebooks, textbooks, mobile science labs, library books, computers and audio-visual learning. For the schools that have blind students, we also provide Braille learning tools, Braille textbooks, etc.

Masoom works closely with various stakeholders in the school like the Trustees, Head Masters, teachers, students, parents and non-teaching staff. Masoom organizes training sessions and workshops for teachers, parents and students.

Masoom takes initiatives to bring about policy level changes in favor of Night Schools. Masoom is aiming at raising awareness and advocating amongst the public and key decision-makers about the urgent need of policy level changes to be made and implemented.

Educational Infrastructure Building & Support

Capacity Building

Advocacy

Through various project interventions the project is expected to enhance the teaching and learning environment in night schools, build leadership quality and employability skills among students and facilitate stakeholder participation, ownership of the program and local partnership for improved school based management and sustenance of the Program.

Masoom has developed a grading tool to regularly assess schools on the basis of different parameters. These parameters categorise schools in 4 levels – D, C, B, A. Grade D is the school which need an improvement in all areas and grade A is for the ideal school. Masoom targets to upgrade all schools to grade A. The grading tool has now been customized to the Shaala Siddhi tool of the state government.

The Grading (M & E) tool will help to:

Determine a baseline for a new school

Correctly grade an existing school

Based on the grades determine future / next course of action.

This will help the school move from grade D to C to B to A - a kind of an upgradation process

Tech on Wheel (TOW)

Masoom started the Tech On Wheels project in 2015-16 to provide night school students with the opportunity to learn computers. The Tech on Wheels bus provides night school students with access to computers, online resources and innovative educational programming that will open doors to a bright future and will act as a unique platform for students’ learning. The project helps students develop digital literacy and 21st century skills required for a promising career in the future. Students will also be better equipped to seek higher education in this field. This program is operated through three well-equipped specially designed buses that provide computer access to 28 students per class. Courses conducted at Tech on Wheels are Graphic Designing, Web designing and Basic Computer. We plan to introduce robotics.

Evening Learning Center (ELC)

The ELC program is specifically designed to support the out of school students / dropouts to pass class 10 especially in the areas where there are no alternative models like night schools or other platforms. The ELC model is similar to the NSTP model, keeping high focus on supporting the students to prepare for Class 10 exams. This model can be run with Govt. Partnership as well as with the community partnership. Masoom proposes to start the ELCs in different parts of Maharashtra where there are no existing Night Schools and reach for alternate opportunities such as open schools or NIOS starting from Mumbai and Pune City. The purpose is to create an opportunity for drop-out students to complete their 10th standard through the state board. These ELCs will largely focus on catering to the social needs of the students by helping them learn life skills, soft skills, vocational skills where education will be a byproduct. ELCs offer one to two years opportunity to students to learnholistically and gain better life skills along with the Class 10 Certificate.

• Currently, we have 12 ELCs in Maharashtra and 5 in Gujarat.

More accessible to girl students

The average ratio of female to male is 70:30

We have set up 17 ELC centers in total at Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar in Gujarat, Mumbai and Pune in Maharashtra. Over the course of next 3 years we plan to start 30 ELCs in different states of India catering to 5000 out of school adolecents/youth.
